Odd McKenzie McGee (by Bill Casey)

Odd McKenzie McGee, Odd McKenzie McGee.
He was tough as a boot; He was tall as a tree.
Odd McKenzie McGee, Odd McKenzie McGee.
Better not mess with Odd McKenzie McGee.

In 1903 'mid the cedar and sod
A baby was born and his mom called him Odd
And no one knows why she gave him that name,
But she drew her last breath saying don't ever change.

By the time he was nine, he had grown to despise
what his mama had done when she looked in his eyes.
But he vowed that he'd honor her final request
And he'd not change his name; he'd conquer the test.

Odd McKenzie McGee, Odd McKenzie McGee.
He was tough as a boot; He was tall as a tree.
Odd McKenzie McGee, Odd McKenzie McGee.
Better not mess with Odd McKenzie McGee.

As the years struggled by, he met every shame
'til no one at all dared challenge his name.
And people, they found, if you called out that word,
He would answer with fist and power unheard.

He soon took a wife, raised the kids that they had,
and the family all knew that they'd just call him dad.
And the town quickly heard, they just left him alone,
No one uttered his name, or they knew they were gone.

Odd McKenzie McGee, Odd McKenzie McGee.
He was tough as a boot; He was tall as a tree.
Odd McKenzie McGee, Odd McKenzie McGee.
Better not mess with Odd McKenzie McGee.

On the deathbed he lay, his time was at hand
And he made his request, for a headstone that's plain.
Just his birth and his death, was all he'd allow.
The promise was made and he died with a scow.

So they laid him to rest and they honored the threat
The stone simply gave his birth and his death
So folks wouldn't know as his family mourned
That he'd finally be rid of the of the name that he scorned

Odd McKenzie McGee, Odd McKenzie McGee.
He was tough as a boot; He was tall as a tree.
Odd McKenzie McGee, Odd McKenzie McGee.
Better not mess with Odd McKenzie McGee.

Well his wife wed anew, and the kids moved away
And the town settled down, but still even today.
A stranger will walk and see that nameless sod
And say as they look, (BIG PAUSE) Why, isn't that Odd.

Odd McKenzie McGee, Odd McKenzie McGee.
He was tough as a boot; He was tall as a tree.
Odd McKenzie McGee, Odd McKenzie McGee.
Better not mess with Odd McKenzie McGee.
